Required Training for Human Subjects Researchers
Federal regulations (45 CFR 46) and the Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) Institutional Review Board (IRB) require all individuals involved in human subjects research to complete training in human research protections before engaging in human subjects research activities.
To meet this requirement, all Principal Investigators and personnel listed in the Key Personnel table (Section B of the IRB application) must complete the appropriate human subjects research course through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Program.
For most social and behavioral research, investigators should complete Social & Behavioral Research – Basic/Refresher. This course is appropriate for both first-time users and researchers renewing their training and is valid for three years.
CITI training is provided at no cost to SIUC researchers.
How to Access CITI and Complete the Required Training
Follow the steps below to access your CITI account and enroll in the required training.
1. Go to the CITI Program Website
Visit the CITI Program website and select “Log In” in the upper-right corner.
2. Log in Through Your Institution
Select “Log in through my organization.” Search for and select Southern Illinois University Carbondale from the list of participating institutions.
3. Sign in with SIUC Credentials
Log in using your SIUC Single Sign-On (SSO) credentials (the same username and password used for other SIUC systems).
-
New users: If you do not yet have a CITI account, you will be prompted to create one after signing in through SSO. Follow the prompts to complete your account setup.
-
Existing users: If you already have a CITI account, you may be prompted the first time you use SSO to link your existing CITI account by entering your current CITI username and password. This step only needs to be completed once.
4. Select the Appropriate Training Course
After logging in, you will be asked to select training modules. Choose the course appropriate for your research (for example, Social & Behavioral Research – Basic/Refresher). Existing users can add courses by navigating to the “My Courses” page and selecting “Learner Tools.”
